Lange Nacht der Bilder
06.09.2024

For the 2024 Lange Nacht der Bilder, I present my studio by inviting ㅇㅇ Lab (Ddaengddaeng Lab - Yeni Ma, Hoa Yun Chung) and Chōri Collective to collaborate. We are brought together by our shared exploration of the theme “Garden.” Together, within ㅇㅇ Lab Vol.1, we collectively share the evolving stages of our research, inviting you to experience the garden as a dynamic and symbiotic space where diverse forms of life coexist, interact, and share thoughts. ㅇㅇ Lab is an annual-themed multidisciplinary research collective. The "o o" signifies a blank space, embodying the uncertainty and open-ended nature of our collaborative journey, and carrying a rhythmic, cyclical quality. In their inaugural year, ㅇㅇ Lab explores the theme of "Garden." They invite people to engage with the garden theme through various lenses, considering the ecological, sociopolitical, cultural, and theatrical dimensions of gardens. As part of MIKNIM’s open studio, ㅇㅇ Lab invites people to engage with the intersection of colonialism, memory, and nature. We share seeds of Korean plants that still bear their Japanese colonial-era names, offering a reflection on how colonial histories persist in our landscapes, botanical knowledge, and food.

MIKNIM attempts to uncover the hidden aspects behind the beauty of gardens. In her past research, "Study_03 on an Abstract Action for Beauty: Naturally Natural Nature" she was inspired by the form of topiary trees and created different sculptural works based on them. Along with a spatial installation taking inspiration from Persian carpets, her video explores what is excluded for the sake of beauty, what must disappear to create order, and the act of pruning protruding branches. Competition programs, where one must survive fierce rivalry, are used as metaphors for exclusion. This research further delves into whether the selection and filtering of plants and people's movements can be connected to the violent histories of colonialism, migration, and uprooting.
